We slipped to poorest countries’ level in maternal mortality - MP

Majilis deputy Galymzhan Eleuov expressed concern over maternal mortality level in the country. He addressed the corresponding parliamentary inquiry to the Prime Minister at the plenary session in Majilis, Kazpravda.kz correspondent reports.
The MP reminded that motherhood and childhood are a constitutional guarantee.
"The maternal mortality rate in 2020 reached a tragic scale, it almost trebled and stands at 36, 5 per 100,000 live births. In the regions, the figures are even more frightening and reach 70, and sometimes up to 95 per 100 000 live births, "the deputy stated.
The assertions that COVID-19 is to blame for the rise in maternal mortality are unsound, he argues.
“You can, of course, blame everything on coronavirus. But international experts say that a high incidence in mortality from COVID-19 among pregnant women was observed only in those countries where at the time of the pandemic there were systemic problems in the organization of obstetric and gynecological care. Where are our healthcare organizers? " the deputy inquired.
He recalled that in 2014, the functions of preparation of women for motherhood were transferred to the general network of primary health care, as a result of which the institution of antenatal clinics was lost.
“This affected availability and quality of outpatient obstetric and gynecological care. Along with this, there is a decrease in the availability of hospital care for pregnant women. In a number of regions, since 2015, the bed capacity of specialized organizations and departments decreased by 30%,” Galymzhan Eleuov said.
The material and technical support of the service is formed on residual principle too.
"Maternal mortality is not only and not so much a medical as a social indicator. With today's results and quality of medical support for mothers, we have slipped to the level of the poorest countries in the world, which WHO designates as "places with unstable conditions and humanitarian problems," the MP said.
He proposes to study reasons for decline in the availability and quality of medical care, exclude rejections of hospitalization to pregnant women at any time, shore up the logistic base of organizations for the protection of maternal and child health, systematically improve the clinical skills of specialists in inpatient and outpatient obstetrics, pediatric gynecology and reproductive health.
